LOLA - Plywood Furniture Design

Night Stands

LOLA is a furniture set built upon birch plywood material.  The goal is for the furniture to be lightweight and portable, but strong through the use of triple axis joints.  Key moments in the furniture include the x-plane, y-plane, and z-plane plywood sheets interlocking to create stability throughout the piece.  In the LOLA night stand, the z-axis cants to provide a new geometry.  Finishes include pickling, burning and simple oils.

The nightstands and table match the wood floors in the intended clients houses influence the design too.  The inside of the pieces pull of the color and finish of the floor, while the outsides match the walls.  Burnt finishes provide a third element to negotiate and play with the oil and pickling finishes.

Fabrication team members included Max Frank, Elizabeth Willis, Matthew Wilson and Kobee Wade.  Randall Dickinson and Dallas Myers provided advisement and logistical support.  Drawings below by Elizabeth Willis.
